David Waugh

Director

David Waugh FCA CA

David qualified as a Scottish Chartered Accountant and has had a wide experience in both practice and industry. This practical experience enables him to understand the problems faced by SME owners. He is focussed on our core principles of Help, Grow and Protect.

David specialises in business development and works with business owners to assist in building and developing their business, raising finance through both banks and increasingly with cloud based funding organisations.

David also specialises in business and personal wealth protection and is actively involved in our Legacy Planning service to ensure that our client’s both protect their family wealth but also ensure that their wishes are respected.

In my spare time I love to travel and experience new countries. I am proud to have visited all 7 continents and over 70 countries to date.

David is also a runner, just not as fast as Jenny!!

Jenny Waugh

Director

Jenny Waugh FCA

Jenny brings a dimension to her role that few others in her field can claim, she has worked in management roles in the Arnotts and Menzies Groups. She then set up her own highly successful training company before completing her Chartered Accountancy examinations and becoming a partner in Hamilton Morris Waugh.

As a result of this hands-on business experience, Jenny has an intimate understanding of the needs of SME owners and she appreciates the difficulties and challenges they face in today’s competitive economic environment.

Jenny’s hallmark is a friendly, conscientious and hard-working style. And if you’re looking for an accountant who will go the distance for you, consider this – Jenny is an experienced Marathon runner and always beats the other partners!

Richard Hamilton

Director

Richard Hamilton FCA

Richard is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

Richard worked in a medium sized accountancy practice for 7 years before joining Cawoods and later Dale Farm in a senior management accounting role.

In 2005 Richard returned to practice as a director in HMW.

Since returning to practice Richard has completed the Chartered Tax Advisor examinations and is our in-house tax specialist.

Richard claims his greatest professional achievement has been to help grow HMW from a start up business with 3 staff (the owners) to a well respected leading accountancy firm in North Down now employing 15 staff.

On a personal level Richard is a member of the Bangor Aurora Leisure Complex & can be found hitting the gym most mornings, he has also completed a couple of half marathons. He has the same dedication in his work always being prepared to go the extra mile for his clients even it means an extra early gym workout to make that appointment!!

Richard is married with 3 children & is Granda to Cameron who is an Australian citizen but will be returning to live in Northern Ireland permanently.

Richard never likes to be predictable & claims his favourite song is Calling Occupants of Inter-planetary Craft   and his favourite place in the world is Oban. Do you believe him?

Adam McDowell

Adam McDowell FCCA

I graduated from Heriot Watt University in 2010, having studied Accountancy and Finance. I became a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in 2014 while training with a firm in Belfast. I gained experience in all aspects of accountancy, focusing mainly on accounts preparation, taxation and audit.

I joined HMW in 2015 to take the next step in my career and was appointed as director in October 2019. I look after a diverse range of clients and am responsible for the audits within the firm, which include clubs, charities, solicitors and manufacturing companies.

Having recently become a new dad, I do not have a lot of spare time! When I do, I enjoy going to the gym and attending gigs and music festivals as often as possible. I am told I have questionable taste in music; my favourite song is Two Months Off by Underworld.

My family is my proudest achievement. I am happiest when on holiday or weekends away with them; the North Coast is hard to beat!

Lauren Taylor

Director

Lauren Taylor ACCA

After graduating from Dundee University with a degree in accountancy, I started a training contract with a small accountancy practice in Dundee. From there I qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant with the ACCA and remained with the firm for 9 years. I then made the move back across the water in 2015 to take up an Account Manager position with HMW and was appointed as a director in October 2019.

I look after a wide range of clients from sole traders through to larger limited companies and enjoy the high level of client contact that this brings. Most recently, I have been tasked with driving the change from desktop to cloud and ensuring that we support our clients the ever-changing environment that we operate in. I am an enthusiastic champion of Xero and have assisted many clients in their conversion from desktop accounting software. I am also responsible for the training of junior staff, ensuring that they are well looked after as they develop their accountancy skills and complete their qualifications.

When I am not wearing my HMW hat, I am an avid gin collector. I am a member of a gin club and my collection now exceeds 50 different gins from across the world. I recently married my long-term partner, Conor, in The Merchant Hotel in Belfast. The wedding was, of course, gin themed! We are very much looking forward to see what married life brings!

Philip Nixon

Client Manager

I graduated from Queens University Belfast in 2014 with a Bachelors degree (BSc) in Accounting and Economics. After University, I took up a position with Grant Thornton before joining HMW in 2015. At HMW, I undertook a training contract with Chartered Accountants Ireland. I successfully completed my final admittance examinations (FAE) in September 2018 achieving first time passes in every subject over the course.

At HMW, I am one of the client managers and have experience with a large portfolio of clients ranging from sole traders to large limited companies and charities over a number of different sectors. I am a progressive thinker, championing Xero online accountancy software and focusing on helping to develop my clients businesses. In my spare time, I enjoy to play badminton and golf… both mediocrely (Although I like to think I’m professional!). I am also a keen football and rugby fan, supporting Manchester United and locally Ulster rugby. When I am not watching or playing sports, you can find me spending time out with friends and family. I am also looking forward to getting married to my long-time partner Holly in March 2021!

Gemma Donaghy

Client Manager

After completing a maths degree at Queen’s University Belfast, I began my career as an accountant with an accountancy firm in Belfast. My role in this firm allowed me to gain a wide range of experience in VAT preparation, accounts, audit and tax. I worked with various clients from sole-traders to larger companies and charities. As this company was a training firm, I gained invaluable experience in training junior members of staff.

I completed my training and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in November 2015. In February 2017, I started in Hamilton Morris Waugh as a client manager. I have my own client base, to which I am the first point of contact. I love having this contact with my clients and building a good rapport with them. My clients know that I’m only a phonecall or email away! I complete any work required, from accounts, VAT returns, tax returns to queries about cloud software such as Xero. When I’m not working hard on my clients accounts and tax returns, there is often some friendly banter going on in the office, normally at my expense!

I became a mum in December 2018 to a beautiful daughter, Antonia. When I’m not in work, I’m normally running after her and trying to stop her from getting into mischief. My husband is a music teacher, and he has taken on the brave task of teaching me to play the banjo. Antonia gets into the spirit of it and dances along.

Claire Crowe

Client Manager

I have been employed in HMW for almost 12 years and have been fortunate to see the fundamental growth and development of the company over this time.  Prior to working in Hamilton Morris Waugh, I trained in a medium sized accountancy firm in Belfast for 5 years.

In my current role as client manager, I manage a large portfolio of clients from sole traders, partnerships, charities and limited companies.   My experience includes:
  • Accounts preparation for a wide range of business types
  • Management accounts
  • UK taxation
  • Advice and training of clients on Sage and Xero
Business sectors cover retail, manufacturing, charities, professional services and property.

I have been an ACCA affiliate for 11 years and am a Certified Xero Advisor.

I have been married for 14 years and have 2 children, who I am most proud of.   I love spending time with my family when I’m not working, and having a good catch-up with friends at the weekends when I get the chance!  My most favourite place in the world is anywhere where my family is.

Peter Stevenson

Payroll Manager

Responsible for maintaining and processing Irish and UK Payrolls on a weekly, fortnightly and monthly basis. Duties also include monitoring and uploading pension contributions for auto-enrolment, submitting CIS returns on a monthly basis and P11d’s on an annual basis.

I have been employed in payroll for the past 7 years and was offered a positon at Hamilton Morris Waugh in March 2018. I have found the company and staff to be friendly, professional, hardworking and a pleasure to work for.

When I am not working I enjoy being with my family. I play golf at Bangor Golf Club and a season ticket holder at Ulster Rugby.

I have travelled and would have to say Tuscany was my favourite place to visit.

Keith Stephenson

Legacy Development Manager

As a Legal Intermediary, I look after our clients legacy planning needs which includes Wills, Powers of Attorney and Family Trusts. I also help our business owners with Shareholder and Cross Option agreements.

With over 25 years of account management experience with Telefonica UK, I have now been working within the legal services industry for the past 3 years.

As a keen golfer you will normally find me at Carnalea on a Saturday morning. When I’m not playing golf I have two boys that keep me busy both playing football for their local teams.
I’m also have a passion for travel and my favourite place in the world has to be Hawaii -  it has everything from Tropical Forests, Volcanoes, white sandy beaches and lots of culture.

Jill Skipp

Payroll Administration Officer

Jill Skipp joined Hamilton Morris Waugh in 2012 after previously working in the shipping industry for 20 years. During that time she worked in various accounting departments before transferring into the transport and logistics department. Here, she enjoyed working daily with colleagues and clients across the UK, Ireland and the rest of Europe.

Jill is currently assisting with payroll and auto enrolment, along with credit control and reception duties.

Jill is married with 2 children and has a bichon frise called, Ollie. In her spare time, she likes to socialise with friends and is a member of a book (wine) club! Jill enjoys travelling and her favourite place to visit is New York.  Over the years, Jill has also been an active fundraiser for various cancer charities. Last year for her 50th birthday, she enlisted the help of family, friends and colleagues to help her complete 50 fundraising events in aid of Cancer Research and Macmillan Cancer Support, the total raised was £7,600.

John McIlroy

Trainee Accountant

My Name is John McIlroy and I am a junior accountant at Hamilton Morris Waugh, studying towards an ACCA qualification.

I work in a range of accountancy practises including Vat, Tax and Year End Accounts.

Before I started here, I studied history in Ulster University before going on to complete a postgraduate Diploma in accountancy.

Outside of work I am an avid rugby fan and have started to take up golf. I still have a passion for history and you would regularly find me watching a history documentary.

My favourite place in the world is Florence in Italy.

Rachel Blaney

Accounting Technician

I attended Belfast Royal Academy, where I achieved three A-Levels.

I joined the HMW team in August 2016, and graduated from Accounting Technicians Ireland in December 2018. I became a full member of the institute and gained the use of the professional letters MIATI.

In my spare time, I juggle between crafts and volunteering with St John Ambulance.  I recently qualified as an Advanced First Aider, meaning I can manage medical emergencies if rescue services are not available at the time. I have dedicated over 120 hours of service to the organisation and I intend to keep going.

Ryan Tully

Accounting Technician Trainee

My name is Ryan Tully. I am an Accounting technician trainee. I went to Lagan College and I wanted to do undertake an apprenticeship programme to further my education as I did not want to go to university. Currently, I am part of the Higher Level Apprenticeship programme with Accounting Technicians Ireland. I work in Hamilton Morris Waugh for four days and then I study one day in the South Eastern Regional College in Lisburn. I have already achieved my level 4 diploma by passing my exams in May and I am now currently working towards my Level 5 diploma.

I’m quite a sporty person. In my spare time, I like to take part in many sports and physical activities. I play a lot of golf and football in my spare time. In HMW, there is a golfing rivalry amongst a few of the employees including myself. My golfing teammate, Keith and I are two time Hamilton Morris Waugh golfing champions and are the current holders of the trophy after winning in Carnalea and Ballyliffen (Sorry Phil!).

I am excited to see what the future has in store for me and my future at Hamilton Morris Waugh!
